KPS Princeton Garage Don’t Blow Your Cool (Water Pump Replacement)Posted June 21, 2026 1:11 PMIt’s always a good idea to keep your cool, and that’s especially true when it comes to some components of your vehicle. One is the engine. It’s hot under that hood thanks to the mini explosions that are occurring in the internal combustion engine when it’s running. Your vehicle has a cooling system which takes the heat out of the engine by moving a liquid coolant to a spot where the heat can escape (the radiator). The part that keeps that coolant moving is the water pump, which could probably be more accurately called the coolant pump since water is only one component of the fluid that does the cooling. If the water pump fails, your engine can overheat quickly, and that can cause significant and expensive damage to your vehicle. Water pumps can be driven by belts (mechanical) or electricity (electric). Your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends mileage intervals when you should consider replacing your water pump even if seems to be working fine. That way you are less likely to have a water pump break down at an inopportune time. Some manufacturers recommend replacing it every 60,000-100,000 miles/100,000-160,000 km. Sometimes your water pump will fail before that, of course. One sign something is wrong with the cooling system is if you notice the engine is overheating. An illuminated engine temperature warning light on your dash or a temperature gauge that shows above normal are two things to look for. You may also see steam coming out of the engine compartment, which is another sign of overheating. Both could mean your water pump needs replacing. We also recommend that when your vehicle’s timing belt needs to be replaced that you have the water pump replaced at the same time since everything will already be apart. When your vehicle is already in to have the water pump replaced, it’s a good time for a technician to examine other cooling system components at the same time. Those will include belts, pulleys, hoses, clamps as well as the radiator, thermostat and heater core.
That Clunk Isn’t Normal: Why Your U-Joints Need Lubrication (Lubricate U-Joints)Posted June 14, 2026 12:39 PMIf you’ve noticed a clunk when shifting from park to drive, accelerating from a stop or letting off on your accelerator, it may be your vehicle warning you about dry or failing U-joints. Those are small, critical components in your drivetrain that allow the driveshaft to flex as your suspension moves, transferring power smoothly from the transmission to the wheels. They take a licking every time your vehicle is on the road since they’re always moving and bearing a heavy load. The key to keeping U-joints healthy is making sure they’re lubricated. If they’re not, they’ll be at the mercy of their main nemesis: friction. Bearings inside then begin to wear, which can cause a lot of play in the joint. That play is what makes the clunk you can hear and feel. If they don’t get lubricated, a dry U-joint can overheat, seize or even fail completely. That can lead to damage to other systems, such as your driveshaft, differential or driveshaft. Another sign you may have a U-joint that’s failing is vibration at highway speeds. The more wear it gets, the less smoothly your driveshaft rotates. You may hear a stutter or hum when you go faster. Your driveshaft may even come loose, leaving you in a very unsafe situation. U-joints that can be serviced have grease fittings. We recommend you have us lubricate yours at regular intervals. That’s especially important on trucks, SUVs and if you tow with your vehicle. If it’s been a while since your drivetrain has been inspected and you notice clunking noises or vibrations, have one of our technicians check your U-joints. Taking care of the issue early can prevent other costly repairs and keep you on the road safely and smoothly. KPS Princeton Garage Protecting Your Vehicle from Theft in Princeton, NJPosted June 7, 2026 1:49 PM
Let's review each of these. One is common sense; you would be surprised how many vehicles are stolen in NJ where the keys were left in the ignition with the doors unlocked. Always take your keys and lock the doors. In fact, in some places it's against the law to leave a vehicle unattended with the keys in the ignition. KPS Princeton Garage | ||
